Doing Business in Mexico
Doing Business In Mexico Is Different
The 4th edition of Live Better South of the Border has an expanded section on doing business in Mexico. Starting a business in Mexico is not impossible, but it requires consultation with people who know Mexico business. You will need the services of a Mexico business consultant, a Mexican lawyer and a Mexican accountant. Not all businesses work as well in Mexico as in other countries and there are legal ramifications to consider.
The best way to be successful in business in Mexico is to have family connections. If you have lots of primos, you will do well. Political connections might help, but ruling elites change, and they can sometimes come back to bite you. Doing things legally can be a real pain. Doing them illegally is easier, but sooner or later, will backfire. What a quandry! That's why I'm here, to help steer you through the morass.
One thing you will absolutely have to have, before you even leave the States or Canada is a VOIP phone. Otherwise you will spend a fortune calling to and from Mexico. See VOIP phones for my take on it. Here is the short version. Get Vonage.

Free advice -- if you want to start a bar in a tourist town, take two aspirins and wait a couple of days. If you still want to do it -- call someone else. While that sort of business in Mexico can be done, it's usually doomed.
