Scuba Diving In Cozumel: A Magical Activity

Scuba Diving In Cozumel: A Magical Activity

OK, first of all the magic of scuba diving in cozumel might have something to do with the fact that there are over 20 dive locations and a plethora of dive shops, so you have many options to find what interests you.  I did some PADI Scuba training in Cozumel as a beginner and these are the sites I experienced.

Tekila: Scuba Diving in Cozumel

This is a shore dive at the Tekila Bar and Grill, used by many nearby dive shops as a training location. It is a great spot to get to know the type of diving and sea life around Cozumel. There is a gradual decline from the shore to about 30 feet. Arrow crabs and cleaner shrimp hide underneath the coral, while French AngelFish, Big Eyes, and Blowfish swim above.

Night Dive

For my first night dive, I went back to Tequila. Night diving is a unique experience even if you have been to the location before. Different sea creatures were visible and the coral that was visible during the day had transformed. The corals feed in the night and extend fuzzy-looking arms to catch something floating by. An electric ray, sea cucumbers, starfish, snails, and even bioluminescence made their appearance in the night.

Palancar Garden: Scuba Diving in Cozumel

One of the most renowned locations in Cozumel is Palancar Gardens. This site features tons of tall coral towers covered in vibrant colors as well as some swim-throughs. It was a great place to experience my first wall dive as well as my first drift dive.  This location is 30 feet and below. It is possible to go much deeper, but the wildlife is mostly at the 30-foot depth. Incredible colors I had never seen before in aquatic plants covered the walls of coral. It was incredible to look up and see coral so tall it was towering above me.

Yucab

This location is similar to Palancar Gardens but on a smaller scale. This location is 50 feet deep with corals that are 10 to 20 feet tall. This location, like Palancar Gardens,  has a plethora of aquatic plants and sea life.  Triggerfish and  Angel Fish swam above the corals and hiding underneath were large lobsters.

Monina

This is a shore dive that features two sunken minesweepers.  This location is only 30 feet deep but is 15 minutes off the shore. There is a large section of turtle grass where small fish and Yellow Rays are hiding. The wrecks are very close to each other and each is about 30 feet in length. The ships are beautiful as well as the sea life that surrounds them.
