Health Benefits of Hot Springs of Mexico

Mike at Camino Angosto

Mexican hot springs provide relief for psoriasis, insomnia, arthritis, bad backs, fibromyalgia to name a few medical conditions. They’ve certainly helped me with most of those. If you’re skeptical, what have you got to lose? If nothing else it’s relaxing to soak in aguas termales.

Arthritis Be Gone!

The health benefits of Mexico’s hot springs and hot pools are well-documented. My own experiences are that soaking brings the arthritis in my knees to its knees. src=”../images/hot%20springs/mike-banos-termales-hermanos-coahuila-1260×960.jpg”> Psoriasis Put to Rest My psoriasis goes into remission after one day at specific thermal springs in Mexico. I know people whose general health and well-being benefit with a stay at many of them.  An insomniac who traveled with me hadn’t slept a full night in ten years went to the land of Nod each night she stayed at one Mexican hot spring – year after year.

Class Won’t Tell

Most Mexican hot springs are commercial enterprises, called balnearios. You have to be specific when asking locals about hot springs. To Mexicans, a balneario doesn’t have to have hot water. It is a generic term for a bathing place. To find a hot spring, ask for un lugar con aguas termales (a place with thermal waters). You might still get a wrong answer, but you have a better than 50-50 chance of finding a hot spring for a soak. Also, upper-class Mexicans do not frequent Mexican hot springs. So if you ask one of them about a balneario, they are more likely to refer you to a spa.

Stink and Glow in the Dark

Taninul, Cd. Valles. Strong Sulfur.

Sulfur hot springs are especially efficacious in treating psoriasis. The higher radioactivity is an important component of the healing properties. I’ve read the same anecdotal evidence in books and articles, written by people with letters after their names who are smarter than I.

Spas Are Different

Don’t confuse spas with hot springs.  Spa people are not necessarily hot springs people. Mexican spas do not usually have hot springs. I can hear some of you yowling – What about Ixtapan de la Sal? They used to have mineral waters in their pools but the gringas didn’t like it because it looked “dirty” because of the high iron concentration. Then the owner of the spa and the owner of the hot spring had a fight so no more sharing.

Spas With Mineral Waters

  •  La Pitaya, in Apaseo El Grande, Guanajuato, 15 minutes from the city of Queretaro.
  •   Termas de San Joaquin, near Monterrey, NL. Unique.
  •  Spa Chignahuapan, Puebla. European style. Magnificent!
  •   No mineral water but one of the best, not frou-frou Spa Yohihuani, Calvillo. AGS. Fantastic place.
